Healthier and Easy Mexican Mule or Mocktail

Have you heard of a cocktail called a Mexican Mule? You’ve probably heard of a Moscow Mule which is made with vodka – well the Mexican Mule is similar, just made with tequila and it’s fantastic!

I realize calling a cocktail healthy is a bit of a stretch, so let’s just say this is a healthier cocktail recipe, ok? Great!

If you order a cocktail at a bar or a restaurant, chances are it will be made with sugary mixers or simple syrup. A traditional Mexican Mule is made with tequila, lime juice, and ginger beer. Ginger beer is a sweetened and carbonated, usually non-alcoholic beverage. So, I started thinking…how can I make this healthier?

How I Made A Healthier Mexican Mule:
  • Cut down on the sugar: I replaced the ginger beer with ginger kombucha. To keep the sugar grams down, be sure to look at the nutrition label for one that is low in sugar. A lot of commercially made kombuchas have tons of sugar and while it is considered a healthy drink, we all need to watch how much sugar we eat and drink!

  • Use 100% juice: It was a little tart for my taste so instead of lime, I decided to add some pineapple juice. You can make this Mexican Mule even healthier by juicing your own or purchase cold-pressed pineapple juice – or if you are short on time, like I was, just grab a can of pineapple juice. Once again, though, take a peek at the nutrition label and make sure the juice is 100% pure and not from concentrate.

Traditionally any kind of Mule cocktail is served in a copper mug. And, yes, the copper mugs are so fun and actually do keep the drink colder, I didn’t have any and really wanted to make a healthy Mexican Mule so I used low ball glasses and they turned out perfect!

This recipe is so easy – you don’t need to froth egg whites, or even use a cocktail shaker. You just add the ingredients together and give it a little stir. That’s it, just three ingredients and you have a fun and festive cocktail for any occasion!

I hope you enjoy this healthier version of a Mexican Mule – it’s really delicious and was a hit with my husband so I think you will like it too! You can definitely leave the tequila out and it makes a fantastic mocktail!
