I love a delicious margarita made with fresh ingredients and it was just what I was craving the other day. And then I was at Sprouts and saw this beautiful bag of Raspberry Blood Oranges from King River and I knew I had to make a margarita out of these! Making your own margaritas at home is super easy, and then you can control not only how much tequila but also how much sugar you put in it.
According to Livestrong.com, a margarita made from a commercial mix can have as much as 72 grams of sugar. That is a TON of sugar hitting your system at one time. And there’s a good chance you aren’t going to have just one. The good news is that when you make a margarita with fresh juices, you save a lot of sugar plus you can control how much you put back into it. I am not a fan of a margarita without any sweetener (it’s way too bitter for me) but by all means, if you can handle something that tart – why not leave the sweetener out all together?!
Normally, I would go into the science behind the recipe and talk about the nutrients each ingredient has, but it’s a hard sell to say that a cocktail is actually healthy. So I will say this is healthier and it has a LOT less sugar than the commercially made mixes! Plus, the blood orange itself is low in sugar and has almost a full day’s need for vitamin C. Since we are trying to boost our immune system these days – I’d say this is a win ;)!
You only need four ingredients to make this delicious skinny cocktail! And honestly, it takes about 5-10 minutes to make! I hope you give this a try and be sure to tag @sageandcelery on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook if you do try it!

Description
This four-ingredient blood orange margarita is super easy to make! It’s delicious, refreshing, and a lot less sugar than the commercial margarita mixes you find at a lot of places.
Ingredients
2 ounces quality tequila, I used Epsolon Blanco
3 Tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice (about 1.5 limes)
3 Tablespoons freshly squeezed blood orange juice or any orange you can find (about 1 small orange)
1 1/2 teaspoons of liquid sweetener, I used agave syrup*
Instructions
1.) Freshly squeeze the lime juice and the orange juice in separate bowls and set aside.
2.) Grab your cocktail shaker and put some ice cubes at the bottom of it. Next, add two ounces of tequila, 3 tablespoons of both lime and orange juice. Then add the sweetener – I chose agave and put the top on the shaker and shake to blend the ingredients together.
3.) Add a few cubes of ice to an eight-ounce glass or larger and pour the mixed drink over the ice. Garnish with a lime or orange slice and enjoy! You can also wet the rim of the class prior to adding the ice and dip it into salt for a more traditional margarita experience. I don’t normally like the salt, so I opted out of this step. Cheers!
Notes
*A lot of people don’t like using agave because it is processed sugar. However, it is low on the glycemic index and tastes best to me in this cocktail but feel free to use maple syrup or honey if you prefer. Really any sweetener you chose will work although it might alter the taste and sugar content a bit.
